How it Happened
An 11-run outburst in the top of the ninth was the difference as Rhode Island recorded a 17-6 win over Massachusetts in the series finale on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Rams took the series from the Minutemen having won the latter two games of the set.Â
Tied with six runs apiece heading into the ninth, URI first took its late lead when a balk allowed
Brody McKenzie to score and from there the Rams were in control. After a wild pitch, a walk and a sac fly caused additional damage, a double from
DJ Perron and four different RBI singles caused the game to get out of control for Massachusetts. Of Rhody's 11 runs in the frame, six were scored with two outs on the board.Â
Both sides got the scoring started early, putting up one run apiece in the opening frame.
Eric Genther's solo shot got the Rams on the board in the top half before Travisano answered with a sac fly for the Minutemen. Genther delivered for URI again in the top of the second, sending a two-RBI single up the middle to put his team ahead, 3-1.Â
Later, UMass regained the lead with a pair of crooked numbers in the fifth and sixth innings. A pair of RBI singles in the fifth were followed with a solo shot and an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth that awarded the home team a 5-3 advantage.
Massachusetts' push in the middle of the game proved to be inconsequential as the Rams went on to stage their impressive comeback. After putting up three runs across the seventh and eighth to UMass' one, Rhody exploded in the top of the ninth to cruise to the win.
