How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball secured a series sweep at Eastern Kentucky with an 8-6 victory in the finale on Sunday afternoon.
After winning 15-3 in eight innings on Friday night, the Rams (7-8) took down the Colonels 9-3 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader before adding their third triumph.
A six-run burst in the middle of the game was key in URI's win. Up 1-0 through the first four frames,
DJ Perron got a Rhody hit parade going in the fifth when he ripped a double down the left field line, driving in a trio of runners.
Jack Hopko and
Scott Penney then delivered a pair of RBI singles, with Penney's plating two scores, to push the advantage to 7-0.
Though
Jake Cullen gave Rhode Island a great start, EKU (0-15) once again took advantage of the bullpen and hung a pair of crooked numbers in the sixth and seventh innings. Two home runs and a sac fly allowed the Colonels to bring the deficit down to 7-6.
Following three scoreless innings, Perron drove in an insurance run for his team in the top of the ninth when he sent
Eric Genther home with a single. Eastern Kentucky managed to get the tying run aboard in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out single but it was the closest that the team got as
Zach Morris struck the final batter of the day out swinging.
Inside the Box Score
- Rhode Island earned its first road sweep since doing so at St. Bonaventure back in 2023.
- The last time URI swept a non-conference opponent on the road was at Delaware State back in 2020. It was the Rams' final series of the year before COVID-19 cancelled the remainder of the schedule.
- Freshman Jake Cullen was awarded the first win of his collegiate career, moving his record to 1-1.
- In 5.0 scoreless innings, he let up just one hit while striking out six batters. He issued two walks and plunked one.
- Sophomore Zach Morris picked up a 3.0-inning save, the first of his career. He fanned six in his scoreless stop, scattering two hits while avoiding any freebies.
- Graduate student DJ Perron led the offense with four RBI and was 2-for-5 at the plate. He doubled twice and scored one run.
- Sophomore Reece Moroney was the only other Ram with multiple hits (2-for-4). He tallied one RBI and scored a run while extending his streak of reaching base safely to 15 games.
- Freshman Ryan Thompson doubled in the fifth inning to record his first collegiate hit. He finished the day 1-for-5 with one run scored.
- Freshman Manny Santos (1.0 IP) and sophomore Josh Kopetski (0.0 IP) were charged with all six of EKU's runs.
