How it Happened
A pair of five-run innings for St. Bonaventure were the difference as the visiting Bonnies held off several rallies to hand Rhode Island a 12-8 loss Saturday afternoon.
The Bonnies scored five runs in the top of the first, four of which were unearned. An error on the leadoff batter kickstarted a rally in which St. Bonaventure scored five runs despite getting just three singles in the frame. A solo home run by David Marshall staked the visitors to a 6-0 lead in the top of the second.
From there, Rhode Island began to chip away. A two-out, two-run single by
Jack Hopko drove in
Nicholas Toro and
Eric Genther to get the Rams on the board. An inning later,
Scott Penney hit a solo shot to trim the deficit to three runs.
The comeback continued in the bottom of the fifth. An infield single by
Reece Moroney, a walk by Hopko and a balk put both runners in scoring position with no outs.
Ryan Thompson brought Moroney in with an RBI groundout, and Hopko scored on the second balk of the inning, pulling URI within one at 6-5.
St. Bonaventure ended the momentum in a big way in the top of the sixth. A bases loaded walk by Alex Hebenstreit forced Jayce Tharnish in with a run before Conner Vercollone unloaded with a grand slam to left field to reestablish a six-run lead at 11-5 for the Bonnies.
The wild back and forth continued in the bottom of the inning. Genther walked and Moroney reached on an error before Hopko drilled a three-run homer to cut the lead to three runs. Rhody loaded the bases with three walks in the bottom of the seventh, but they were unable to further cut into the lead.
A solo homer by Chris Hoalcraft extended the St. Bonaventure lead to 12-8 in the top of the eighth. Rhode Island was unable to mount a final comeback.
