EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a clash of two top teams in the Atlantic 10, Fordham defeated Rhode Island 4-0 Saturday afternoon.
Playing indoors at Centre Court Tennis Club in East Providence, Fordham (13-4) won at No. 1 and No. 3 to grab the doubles point. The visiting Rams then swept the top three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory.
While the score was 4-0, Rhode Island (14-4) was leading at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles when the match was halted.
Grace Darcy led Lily Chitambar 6-3, 4-6, 3-1 at the fourth spot.
Anastasia Pettersson was up 4-6, 6-2,4-3 at No. 5, and
Klara Nelander had a 7-6 (1), 3-3 edge at No. 6.
"Congratulations to Fordham, they deserved to win today," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "The team competed hard and we put ourselves in a situation to mount a comeback, but you can't give good teams large leads. Still, there were a lot of positives from this match and it's invaluable playing the top teams leading into the A-10 Championship."
Rhode Island's match against Southern New Hampshire that was slated for Sunday has been called off due to inclement weather. Rhody returns to action on Saturday, April 19 when it hosts Massachusetts in the regular-season finale. The match – which is Senior Day for
Klara Nelander – will begin at 1 p.m.
