How it Happened
A five-run rally in which the ball never left the infield paved the way for Rhode Island to beat Dayton 8-1 Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep in Atlantic 10 action.
With two on and two out,
Anthony DePino drew URI's third walk of the inning to load the bases in the bottom of the second.
Eric Genther was hit by a pitch to force
Nic Notarangelo in with the first run of the game.
Reece Moroney followed with the fourth walk of the inning, bringing
Rob Butler in for a 2-0 lead.
Jack Hopko hit a hard grounder that was knocked down by a diving Ty Mainolfi at second base. The ball went off his glove for a base hit that allowed DePino and Genther to score. Mainolfi's throw to try and get Genther was late and off target, getting away from catcher Ryan MacDougall, allowing Moroney to score an unearned run and cap the five-run rally.
Rhody stayed in control the rest of the way as freshman
Jake Cullen (3-2) was outstanding on the bump. He went 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Only one of the four hits was for extra bases, as Cullen made the early lead count for the Rams.
