How it Happened
A long single caused Rhode Island Baseball to be walked off by George Mason, 5-4, in the series opener between the two teams on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

Down to their final three outs, the Patriots put back-to-back runners on in the bottom of the ninth and put pressure on the Rams. Sophomore Joe Sabbath was able to record one out before Lucas Alberti drove in the leadoff runner for the win.

George Mason had been first to strike in a game that had the feel of a playoff meeting, using an RBI triple and a sac fly to go up 2-0 in the third. The Patriots later added one more run to their lead in the fifth when James Quinn-Irons skied a sac fly.

After recording just two hits as a team in the first five innings, DJ Perron gave Rhody a momentum boost in the sixth when he drilled a three-run homer that knotted up the score. His ninth long ball of the year scooped up Eric Genther (hit by pitch) and Reece Moroney (walk). Though George Mason's starter took the next batter down swinging, Nic Notarangelo stepped up to the plate and cranked out a two-out homer that awarded URI its first lead of the day at 4-3.

Rhode Island's advantage was short-lived, as a defensive miscue by the Rams followed by some small ball and a single poked through the left side allowed the Patriots to plate an unearned run. Rhody had a solid chance to drive in the go-ahead run in the seventh when Brody McKenzie and Eric Genther were both hit by pitches, but they were left stranded. The next six Rams were retired in order before the Patriots staged their final comeback.
