How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball split its final two games at George Mason, falling 10-1 before rallying for a 15-9 win. Though the Patriots won the series, the teams finished the weekend in a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 standings with Saint Joseph's.

Game One - George Mason 10, Rhode Island 1
A late surge by the Patriots lifted them to a 10-1 victory over the visiting Rams in the second game of the weekend. The contest took two days to complete, as the teams were rained out in the sixth inning on Saturday.

At the time of the pause, which occurred in the sixth, George Mason had a 2-0 lead over starter Trystan Levesque having stolen home in the first inning before adding its second run on an RBI single in the fourth.

Nic Notarangelo sparked the Rams when the teams picked back up, driving a solo home run out to right center in the top of the seventh to cut the lead in half but the home team responded with a pair of RBI singles to re-extend its lead to 4-1.

Momentum continued to favor the Patriots from there, as they came up with a big eighth inning to put the game out of reach. Three different arms made appearances out of the bullpen for URI while George Mason put up six runs on four hits.

Game Two - Rhode Island 15, George Mason 9
A trio of Jack Hopko home runs and late-game struggles for the George Mason bullpen propelled the Rams to a 15-9 win in the series finale.

The ball flew for both teams, as 14 of the game's 24 combined runs were scored via homer.

Hopko got going early, becoming one of three Rams to take the Patriots' starter deep in the top of the second. Both DJ Perron and Scott Penney also went yard. After Hopko added another to his total, a three-run shot in the third that put URI up 6-0, George Mason answered in its half of the frame with a three-run shot that cut the lead in half. In the following inning, another Patriot went deep to make it a one-run game.

The teams traded scores through the middle of the game, with George Mason managing to tie things up in the seventh on a long single (7-7). After a Hopko RBI single put the Rams back on top by one score in the eighth, the offense put up seven runs in the ninth behind home runs from both Hopko and Nic Notarangelo, a Ryan Henschel double, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

George Mason did get two runs back in the bottom of the ninth, using an RBI single and even bringing in a run on a double play, but pitcher Joe Sabbath negated any potential comeback.

Inside the Box Score
  • Junior Jack Hopko became just the third Ram in program history to belt out three or more home runs in a single game. Only Tony Hill (4; March 15, 1985) and Jason Chamsarian (3; March 25, 1998) have previously achieved the feat.
  • Hopko batted .400 on the day, going 4-for-10 with three runs scored and seven RBI.
  • Graduate student Nic Notarangelo led the offense with six hits across the two games. He homered twice and registered two RBI.
  • Senior Eric Genther drew a team-best five walks over the two games. He singled once and scored three runs.
  • Sophomore Joe Sabbath was credited with the win in the finale, improving to 5-2 on the season. He was charged with two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings out of the bullpen.
  • Freshman Parker Aikens was the only Ram that avoided giving up any runs on the day. He threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
  • George Mason out-hit Rhode Island 15-5 in game one. Rhody had a narrow, 15-14 advantage in game two.
  • Graduate student Trystan Levesque was the pitcher of record for URI in the first game, moving his season record to 5-1. He allowed two runs on seven hits and fanned six batters while avoiding any walks.
