How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball was run-ruled by UConn, 16-6, on Wednesday night at Elliot Ballpark. A three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh delivered the final blow against the visiting Rams.
Connecticut scored in all but one inning, putting up the 16 runs on half as many hits. The Huskies took advantage of freebies issued by the URI pitching staff, which dealt 11 walks and plunked five batters.
A grand slam off the bat of
DJ Perron got the game started in Rhody's favor, as he picked up
Eric Genther,
Reece Moroney and
Jack Hopko to put URI ahead 4-0. All three of the runners had reached via consecutive singles.
A pair of runs in the bottom of the first and the third knotted the score up for the Huskies before a five-run fourth awarded them their first lead. Connecticut continued to drive runs in from there.
A two-RBI single from
Scott Penney broke up a five-frame scoreless streak for URI in the top of the seventh before UConn's Connor Lane belted out the game-winner.
