How it Happened
An early offensive burst and a stellar start by
Jeremy Urena powered Rhode Island Baseball to an 8-3 win over Fordham on Friday night at Houlihan Park.
Urena was in control from the start, retiring the first 11 batters he faced in order. Over the course of his 7.0-inning start, he allowed just one run on three hits and fanned three of his career-high seven batters in the third inning.
The offense also made its mark early, opening up the game with a two-spot thanks to a pair of Fordham miscues. In the top of the second, a sac fly from
Anthony DePino and a double off the bat of
Eric Genther added to the lead before
DJ Perron lifted URI to its 8-0 margin on a grand slam.
Though the visiting Rams were held scoreless for the final seven innings, it was inconsequential as Urena stifled Fordham. After he exited the game, allowing the lone score in the sixth when a player drove in a run on a groundout, the hosts put up two runs on an error and a sac fly in the ninth.
