Game Notes

RHODE ISLAND VS. UCONN - SERIES NOTES
  • The Rams and the Huskies will compete for the 205th time in the teams' shared history when they take the field on Wednesday.
  • Connecticut has earned a 119-81-4 advantage over Rhode Island since 1896, though the teams have split the last two meetings.
  • A year ago, Rhody defeated UConn 4-1 at home at Bill Beck Field behind a stellar performance from the URI pitching staff.
  • Four arms limited the visitors to just two hits on the day. Redshirt junior Brandon Hsu was credited with the win, allowing one run on two hits in a 4.0-inning start.
  • For Rhode Island, this will be the first trip to Storrs since the 2022 season. In 2023, the Huskies hosted the Rams at Dunkin' Donuts Park, home of the Hartford Yard Goats (Colorado Rockies Double-A).
  • Rhody has several ties to the UConn team, with two former Huskies part of its program.
  • Right-handed pitcher Tommy Turner, currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, played his freshman season at Connecticut in 2024 before returning to his home state institution.
  • Turner appeared in five games, including the NCAA Super Regional contest opposite No. 8 Florida State.
  • Pitching coach Dave Fischer also played for UConn from 2009-12, where he earned a bachelor's degree in geography.
  • After graduating, Fischer was drafted in the 18th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. He also spent time in the Minnesota Twins' system and pitched for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League as well as the Rockland Boulders of the Can-Am League.
MEETING IN THE MIDDLE
  • Rhode Island holds a 6-3 record in midweek games this season, which includes a split 2-2 mark on the road.
  • As a team, the Rams are batting .297 in those nine outings with 12 doubles, eight triples and eight home runs.
  • Junior Jack Hopko is slashing a team-best .516 in the middle of the week, one of three Rams hitting .300 or better. Seniors Brody McKenzie (.444 avg.) and Eric Genther (.344 avg.) have also hit the mark.
  • Genther has homered twice in the stretch, while six different players have gone yard once.
  • On the other side of the ball, junior Dorsy Asencio has pitched a team-high 12.2 innings for URI in midweek games. He has a 4.97 ERA in the spread to go along with 13 strikeouts.
  • The Rams have been using midweek games as staff days, with 14 different arms having made at least one appearance.
  • Rhody's pitching effort has been well-balanced, as each of the team's six wins are credited to a different player.
  • Sophomore Joe Sabbath is the only Ram that has earned a midweek save, doing so when he closed the door in the win against Stonehill with 1.0 scoreless inning.
ON THE RHODE TO 30
  • Rhode Island is rapidly approaching its first 30-win season since the 2017 campaign when the Rams went 31-22.
  • The year before that, URI won the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship before finishing the year 31-27.
  • A 30-win campaign  would be the third under head coach Raphael Cerrato
  • Rhody has had 10 30-win seasons over the last 20 years.
  • The best the team did in that stretch was 37-20-1 in 2009.
