How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Richmond 12-9 on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
The Rams outscored their visitors 9-1 over the last four innings to salvage the conference series, claiming their third Atlantic 10 set of the 2025 season.
Richmond had control early in the game. After scoring three runs on five hits in the first, the Spiders drilled two homers while getting an additional two scores on a single and a wild pitch to build a substantial lead.
Though its offense struggled to get going at first, URI was able to put up a three-spot in the bottom of the third.
Reece Moroney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to award the team its first run before
Jack Hopko's sac bunt and a wild pitch plated an additional two.
Richmond got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth when another home run re-extended the lead to 8-3 but the Spiders struggled to get much else going for the remainder of the game.
Following two scoreless innings,
Jack Hopko delivered a one-out single that broke up the visitors' no-hitter in the sixth before scoring on
Scott Penney's triple. Rhody's momentum then carried into the seventh, as
Eric Genther plated two runs with a base hit before Hopko drove him in with another single to cut the deficit down to one at 8-7.
Though a sac fly allowed the Spiders to get one run back in the top of the eighth, Rhode Island exploded for a five-spot in its half of the frame to rally for the victory. It started when the Rams, who had loaded up the bases with one out, sent two runners in on an
Anthony DePino double to earn their first lead of the day at 10-9. After a walk and an error allowed two more runners to reach,
Ryan Thompson singled up the middle to stretch the advantage to its final margin at 12-9.
Richmond was unable to get anything going at that point in the game, as all three batters were retired by
Joe Sabbath in the ninth to close things out.
