How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball was out-slugged, 18-16, by Saint Joseph's in the series finale between the two teams on Sunday afternoon at Smithson Field.
The game, which took nearly four and a half hours to complete, saw 34 total hits and five combined errors to go along with the 34 runs.
Rhody scored in all but two innings and managed to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth after
Rob Butler led off with a home run and pinch-hitter
Ryan King was hit by a pitch. Though
Reece Moroney drove a ball out that looked promising, a Hawk outfielder made a grab at the wall to end the game.
Both sides saw the ball well, as both Butler and
Anthony DePino homered for the Rams, while Saint Joseph's came up with three bombs of its own.
DePino first went deep in the second inning when his grand slam boosted URI to a 5-0 advantage. After the Hawks got three of the runs back in the third, Rhody's all-time career home runs leader went yard once again and scooped Moroney up on the way to re-extend the lead to 7-3.
Though the teams continued to trade runs, Rhode Island remained in front of the Hawks until Alex Kelsey belted out a grand slam in the seventh that put his ballclub up, 17-15. In the following frame, a runner came in on a dropped third strike to help SJU reach its 18-run total and hold on for the win.
