JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
- Rhode Island sophomore Theo Puterbaugh placed 41st out of 48 in the men's shot put at the NCAA East Preliminary Championship Thursday.

Competing in the first of four flights at the University of North Florida, Puterbaugh posted a throw of 16.69 meters (54 feet, 9 1/4 inches), which came on his second of three attempts. He placed 10th out of 12 in the first flight. He was one spot behind Akron junior Josiah Cox (16.73 meters) and one place ahead of Indiana freshman Dane Sebert (16.6m).

The top 12 finishers in the event earned a spot at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. starting Wednesday, June 11. Ole Miss junior Tarik Robinson-O'Hagan won the East Preliminary with a throw of 20.85 meters.

Originally scheduled to compete on Wednesday, Puterbaugh had to wait a day due to poor weather that postponed the bulk of Wednesday's events. Rhody teammate Alex Baez competed in the hammer throw, but he faulted on each of his three attempts and was disqualified.

Rhode Island has one more competitor remaining at the meet. Megan Wood will be in the women's discus Saturday afternoon.
