WETHERSFIELD, Conn. - Rhode Island was the only team to finish under par as the Rams successfully defended their team title at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate Tuesday.
Sophomore
Luke Stennett won his second individual title in as many events, firing a 2-under 69 to finish the tournament 9-under par. He maintained the four-stroke lead over the 75-player field that he started the day with. The Rams had three top-10 finishers, as junior
Josiah Tong was 1-under par to tie for fifth place and senior
Aidan O'Donovan finished even par to tie for ninth place.
Sophomore
Tyler Bruneau shot 2-over 74 in the final round, vaulting himself 10 spots up the individual leaderboard.
Rhode Island began the day with a four-stroke lead over the field, but its grip on the title loosened midway through the round. URI's top four scorers were a combined plus-four through the first nine holes of play, leaving the Rams at even par as a team with nine holes to play.
Over the final nine holes, Stennett, Tong, O'Donovan and Bruneau combined to go 5-under par. All four players were at least even par on the back stretch, helping Rhode Island pull away from the field.
"Well, I've said this many times before. Being the team that can bend and not break has its dramatic advantages, but it's not how we want to win golf tournaments," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "We're thrilled to win two in a row, but both times we had considerable leads that we gave away and had to come back. That is not how you make it to the NCAA.
"On the positive side, Luke has won three straight regular season tournaments. He's established himself as one of the greatest golfers in history of URI, but he needs to sustain that. I have zero doubt he will, and if he does not, it will not be because of lack of preparation and effort."
Stennett has opened the season with back-to-back individual titles. He also won the final regular-season event of the 2024-25 season, the Penn State-hosted Rutherford Intercollegiate. He has 10 top-10 finishes in 10 regular-season tournaments, including seven top-five finishes.
"What I liked about today's win was that Tyler and Josiah were told after nine holes that we needed them to step up, and that's exactly what they did," Burke said. "In addition to Luke playing well I thought Aidan really gave us a spark by getting us to play tough."
Tong fired three birdies over his final nine holes and finished the round 1-under par. Bruneau recovered from a double-bogey midway through his round to end the day 1-under over his final nine holes.
"The days of coming from behind are over," Burke said. "We have to establish ourselves from the start and scratch and claw our way to the title. Our next two tournaments have great fields. It will be more about competitiveness than golf. But as I said yesterday, today was a gut check and we cleared the hurdle with flying colors."
Rhode Island will play the three-day UConn Invitational next. The tournament begins Sunday, Sept. 28 at GreatHorse in Hampden, Mass.
