HAMPDEN, Mass. - Rhode Island struggled on the opening day of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse, landing in a tie for 12th place out of 15 teams Sunday.
All five Rhody golfers were at least 4-over par in the opening round, as the Rams scored 307. URI is tied with Lafayette. Host Connecticut leads the field with an even-par 288, 19 strokes ahead of Rhode Island.
Tony Liu was URI's top finisher for the day, shooting four-over par. He is one of four players tied for 38th overall in the field of 84 players. Three other Rams -
Luke Stennett,
Josiah Tong and
Tyler Bruneau - all carded a 5-over par 77 to land in 14-way tie for 42nd place.
"It was a terrible day of golf and we are capable of a great deal more," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "We were 12 over on the par threes. We were 12 over for the final four holes."
The Rams will be paired with Holy Cross and Sacred Heart during Monday's middle round of the 54-hole tournament.
