HAMPDEN, Mass. - A strong start helped Rhode Island move up the team leaderboard early on Day Two of the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse Monday. However, the momentum faded later in the round and the Rams ended the second round in sixth place in the 15-team standings.
At 5-under par, host Connecticut has a firm 10-stroke lead over second-place Boston College. Villanova (+7), St. John's (+10) and Fairfield (+10) are in front of Rhody (+19) heading into the final round.
Rhode Island began the day on the 10th hole and caught fire early. Through the first six holes of the day, the Rams were 5-under par.
Luke Stennett (3-under), Tyler Brunuea (1-under) and
Aidan O'Donovan (1-under) were all under par a third of the way through the round, while
Tony Liu was even par.
However, the fortunes shifted. The Rams were a combined 3-over on the par-4 18th hole, then went four-over on the third hole.
"We had it going early when we were five under on the tougher side of the golf course, but we gave it all back too easily and too quickly," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "We put ourselves in position to post a great number and we let it slip away. Being over par on the front just gives shots to the field."
Liu and Bruneau both delivered a pair of birdies in a five-hole stretch from holes 4-8. Heading into the final hole of the day, URI was 3-under, but a trio of bogeys resulted in an even-par team score for the day.
Despite the late struggles, Rhode Island made a move up the team standings. The Rams moved from a tie for 12th place to sole possession of sixth place heading into Tuesday's final round. St. John's and Fairfield are both nine strokes ahead of URI, while Fairleigh Dickinson is two behind.
"I expect a very good day tomorrow," Burke said. "They have worked hard enough to make a move."
Liu (+4) and Stennett (+4) are both tied for 25th on the individual leaderboard. Stennett was 1-under on the day, jumping up 17 spots in the 84-player field. Bruneau (+5) is one stroke behind them in a tie for 32nd place, while O'Donovan (+8) is in a tie for 47th place.
Josiah Tong (+11) is tied for 58th place.
Rhode Island will be grouped with St. John's and Fairfield on the final day of competition.
