Strong Finish Helps Rams Place Third at UConn Invitational

Team Standings | Individual Results

HAMPDEN, Mass. - Rhode Island put together an incredible final round at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse, shooting 11-under par as a team to finish in a tie for third place in the 15-team tournament.

The 11-under par was the best team score by any school during the three-round event. It was six strokes better than the next lowest round. Team champion Connecticut and second-place Boston College both were 5-under on in the second round.

The Huskies held off BC by three strokes to win the title. Rhode Island and St. John's tied for third place, eight strokes behind UConn. After finishing in a tie for 12th place after the opening round, Rhode Island managed to jump nine places over the final two days.

"I am sincerely happy for coach Dave Pezzino of UConn," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "He puts his heart and soul into this event and it is the classiest and best run event in New England college golf."

Tony Liu and Luke Stennett both were 5-under par in the final round to finish in a group of three players tied for eighth place. Liu had his best round of the season and one of the best of his career, catching fire during the eight-hole span from No. 8 through No. 15. With help of five birdies and an eagle, he was six-under during the stretch. He finished with eight birdies on the day.

Stennett had six birdies in the final round. His lone blemish was a bogey on No. 2, as he shot par on 11 holes. He and Liu both jumped 17 spots in the final round to give the Rams two top 10 finishers.

"Today showed what we are capable of but also showed the painful lesson that we are not going to win unless we're focused for three rounds," Burke said. "It's easy to say that we got great tournaments out of Tony and Luke. Luke had the best final two rounds of anyone in the field and Tony had the second best final two rounds in the field.

"All you need to know about how good we are and how poorly we played in the first round is the fact that in one round today, we beat the tournament champions by 16 shots."

Also making a big move was Tyler Bruneau, who was 3-under for the round. With four birdies and just one bogey, he leaped 17 spots to finish in a four-way tie for 15th place.

Aidan O'Donovan was the fourth scorer on the day. He was even par through 17 holes before ending with a double bogey. His steady play throughout the round helped him jump nine spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 38th place. All five Rhody golfers move up the board in the final round, as Josiah Tong shot 3-over par to finish the tournament in a tie for 54th place.

Rhode Island is off until Oct. 13-14, when it travels to Kettering, Ohio for the Moraine Intercollegiate, hosted by Miami (Ohio).
