PROVIDENCE HOSTING SECOND OCEAN STATE CUP - TOURNAMENT NOTES

  • All four Division I women's volleyball programs in the state will gather for the second-annual Ocean State Cup starting on Friday.
  • The two-day tournament will feature six matches, with each school facing each other one time. 
  • All matches involving Providence will be streamed on Friars.com.
  • Rhode Island and Providence will meet Friday afternoon.
  • The Rams take on Bryant and Brown Saturday as part of a four-match lineup.
  • Last season Bryant served as the tournament host.
  • Brown and Bryant both went 2-1, with Brown winning the head-to-head meeting.
  • Rhode Island and Providence both were 1-2, with Rhody beating the Friars.
  • Providence's victory came at the expense of Brown.

RHODE ISLAND VS. PROVIDENCE - SERIES NOTES

  • Dating back to 1976, Rhode Island and Providence have faced each other 68 times. 
  • Rhode Island holds a 37-29-2 series record with Providence, including three straight wins. 
  • Providence went 1-2 last weekend at the East Texas A&M Tournament.
  • After sweeping the hosts in the season opener, the Friars fell 3-1 to North Texas and 3-2 to Little Rock.
  • Sophia Adkins led Providence with 33 kills (2.75 kills/set) during the opening weekend.
  • PC head coach Margot Royer-Johnson is in her 26th season at the helm and has a record of 241-509. 
  • She is married to Jeff Johnson, who is an associate athletic director for student-athlete development at URI.

RHODE ISLAND VS. BRYANT - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island and Bryant have faced each other 15 times.
  • Rhode Island holds a 10-4-1 series record over the Bulldogs.
  • Bryant has won the last four matches in the series. 
  • The Bulldogs are 0-3 on the season, falling to Duke, Florida International and Houston at the Duke Tournament last weekend.
  • Now in her 30th season at Bryant, head coach Theresa Garlacy has a career mark of of 614-409.
  • She has led the Bulldogs to five straight winning seasons, including an 18-10 record last year.
  • Outside hitter Arianna Ugolini is a two-time First Team All-America East selection. 
  • She has 735 career kills for the Bulldogs, recording more than 300 in each of the last two seasons.

RHODE ISLAND VS. BROWN - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island and Brown have faced each other 39 times. 
  • Rhode Island holds a 27-11-1 series lead with the Bears, but Brown has won the last three matches.
  • For the second straight year, the Ocean State Cup will serve as the season opener for the Bears.
  • Head coach Taylor Virtue is in her third season with the Bears and has a career record of 30-21.

SETTING THE TABLE

  • Rhode Island has played four setters through the first three matches of the season.
  • Head coach Ryan Sullivan has employed a 5-2 lineup thus far, getting setters Keira McCarles, Ema Stermenska, Autumn Tombline and Jessica Parker all into the mix.
  • McCarles - who started for much of last season - has seen the most time, playing in nine out of 10 sets. 
  • She leads the team with 39 assists and averages 4.33 per set.
  • Stermenska  - who transferred from Southern Illinois - has 24 assists in seven sets (3.43 per set).
  • Trombline is a true freshman with 14 assists in five sets (2.80 assists/set).
  • Parker joined Rhody from Elon and has 13 assists in four sets (3.25 assists/set).
