Game Recap: Football |

Great Danes Beat Rhode Island in Shootout, 38-21

How it Happened
Rhode Island (4-4, 1-3 CAA Football) played from behind for the entire game and could not pull even in a 38-21 loss to UAlbany Saturday afternoon.

UAlbany (5-3, 3-1 CAA Football) took the opening possession 78 yards in 10 plays for the touchdown. The Great Danes executed cleanly, with the drive culminating in a 5-yard touchdown by Rashon La Mons just five minutes into the game.

UAlbany had a chance to bury the Rams early when Jeremiah Pruitt got an interception on Rhode Island's third play from scrimmage. The turnover gave the Great Danes the ball at the URI 34-yard line. The defense came up with a stop, forcing a missed 38-yard field goal attempt by Brayden Heitmeyer 38-yard field goal miss.

UAlbany got another touchdown just before the half when Kai Colon hit BJ Norman for a 29-yard touchdown pass with eight seconds left in the second quarter. The Great Danes took a 14-point lead into the break.

The second half turned into a video game, as the teams combined for touchdowns on the first five possession. Rhody opened and closed the third quarter with touchdowns. On the first possession of the second half, the Rams drove 75 yards in 12 plays, with Terrance Campbell plunging in from the 1-yard line. UAlbany responded with a touchdown right away when La Mons ripped off a 36-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1. It was Rhody's turn to respond, and the Rams went 75 yards in 15 plays. On the final snap of the quarter, Alex McLelland hit Sean Byrd for a 20-yard touchdown pass to pull the Rams back within one score.

The touchdown barrage continued. La Mons broke off his third touchdown run of the day less than two minutes into the fourth. His 65-yard yard touchdown run put the Great Danes ahead 28-14. Needing a score to stay alive, Rhode Island went 65 yards in six plays, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by Alex McClelland to make the score 28-21.

Rhody appeared to make a stop on the next possession, but a pass interference on third-and-7 from the URI 45-yard line allowed UAlbany to extend its drive and eventually get a 33-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game at 31-21 with 4:12 to go.

Needing a score to keep the game alive,  Rhode Island had a turnover on downs. The Great Danes had two sacks that essentially sealed the game.
