Game Recap: Football |

Buchanan Makes History as Rams Top Maine in Overtime

How it Happened
Marquis Buchanan's 25-yard touchdown helped lift Rhode Island (5-4, 2-3 CAA Football) to a 14-13 overtime win over Maine (1-8, 1-5 CAA Football) on Saturday afternoon at Centreville Bank Stadium.

Maine possessed the ball first in overtime and took its first lead of the afternoon on a one-yard touchdown run by Black Bear running back Nick Lauglin. Rams defensive lineman Patrick Conserve blocked the ensuing extra-point attempt, giving Rhode Island a chance to win with a touchdown and successful point-after try.

The Rams did just that. Alex McClelland connected with Buchanan for a 25-yard touchdown, and Ty Groff drilled the extra point to give Rhode Island the 14-13 win. Buchanan's touchdown grab also pushed him to 3,969 career receiving yards, surpassing Brian Forster for the most in program history. Forster accumulated 3,944 yards from 1983-85 and 1987.

Both the Rams and Black Bears struggled to generate offense for the bulk of the first half. Rhode Island's defense sparked the Rams to a touchdown lead late in the second quarter. With 32 seconds left before halftime, Tyson Grimm intercepted Maine quarterback Caden Drezek at the Rhode Island 16-yard line and returned it 84 yards for a touchdown, giving the Rams a 7-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Maine recorded the game's first offensive touchdown in the fourth quarter. Running back Rashawn Marshall evened the score at 7-7 with a 25-yard touchdown run. The game remained tied through the end of regulation, setting up the overtime theatrics and Buchanan's historic score.
