Ramblers Hold Off Rhody In Three Sets

How it Happened
Loyola Chicago (6-8, 3-1 Atlantic 10) kept Rhode Island at an arm's length throughout as it handed URI a 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 loss Saturday night.

Despite a match with several long, competitive rallies, the host Rams (5-10, 0-3 A-10) fell just short in each set. There were 15 ties throughout the three sets, but only four lead changes, three of which came in the final set.

Set One - Loyola Chicago 25, Rhode Island 19
The Rhode Island offense struggled to find rhythm, hitting negative-.086 in the set. With Loyola Chicago producing four blocks, the Rams committed 10 attack errors. The visiting Ramblers had seven attack errors of their own. However, Loyola Chicago had13 kills, compared to seven for URI.

Set Two - Loyola Chicago 25, Rhode Island 20
The second set was tight throughout, with five ties and the teams separated by one point on 14 different occasions. A Hannah Jonick kill got Rhody within one at 20-19, but a 5-1 Loyola Chicago stretch put the set away. Leyna Nguyen had three kills for the Ramblers during the key stretch.

Set Three - Loyola Chicago 25, Rhode Island 20
Rhode Island had its best offensive showing in the final set, hitting .289 with 14 kills and just three errors. However, Loyola Chicago was just a little better, getting 17 kills with three errors. Leyna Nguyen and Chloe Morgan combined for 11 kills in the set. Rhody got three kills each from Havyn Rolle, Cara Richter, Emily Sawyer and Hannah Jonick, but it could not extend the match.

  • Cara Richter led Rhody with 10 kills. She added seven digs and two block assists.
  • Hannah Jonick continued her solid play, recording six kills with just one error in 11 swings.
  • Havyn Rolle also had six kills with one error to go with two digs and two block assists.
  • Dakota Henry had 20 digs.
  • Carly Thomas had 21 assists and four digs
