Rams Finished Sixth at Palmas Del Mar

Final Standings | Round 3 Results

HUMACAO, Puerto Rico
- Rhode Island tied for sixth place at the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate, which concluded Tuesday afternoon.

No. 25 Wake Forest won the team title, beating the rest of the field by six strokes. TCU (-20) was second, followed by Southern Illinois (-15), host UNC Greensboro (-11) and Rutgers (-7). Rhode Island and Kennesaw State both finished -5 to tie for sixth.

URI's top three golfers on the day - Tyler Bruneau, Luke Stennett and Aidan O'Donovan - provided a late boost. The trio shot a combined minus-7 over the final 15 holes they played. However, a rough patch for the team from holes 12-15 caused the Rams to drop three spots in the team standings during the final round.

"I am taking complete responsibility for what happened today," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "I took my foot off the gas and  changed the itinerary after the round yesterday. That will not happen again. I did not put the team in the best position to win the golf tournament.

"We have a lot of work to do going forward."

From holes 12-15, Rhode Island's four scoring golfers combined to shoot 11-over par. The 14th hole in particular gave the Rams problems, as Rhody was plus-5 on the hole.

Rhode Island had three golfers finish the tournament tied for 33rd in the field of 87. Stennett, O'Donovan and Tong were all 1-over par for the three rounds. Stennett finished strong, shooting 5-under over the final two rounds to climb 35 spots in two days.

Bruneau had the strongest final round for the Rams, shooting 3-under par. He played particularly well on the front nine, carding three birdies without any bogeys.

Rhode Island is off until March 2, when it heads to the Sam Ryder Invitational hosted by Stetson. The tournament will be played at the LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla.
