How it Happened
A ninth inning offensive surge was not enough for Rhode Island to overcome Jacksonville as the Rams fell in game one of Saturday's doubleheader 11-6.Â
Trailing by eight runs heading into the top of the ninth inning, the Rams plated three runs to cut into the Jacksonville lead.
Scott Penney flew out to left, allowing
Jack Hopko to score and
Ryan Henschel doubled knocking in
Ryan King accounting for Rhode Island's final two runs of the afternoon.
Jacksonville jumped on Rhode Island early. The Dolphins put three runs on the Rams in the home half of the first inning. Rhode Island responded shortly thereafter with a two-run top of the second. With one out, the Rams loaded the bases. Rhode Island scored its first run on a sacrifice fly to center field from
Ryan Thompson, scoring King. Then
Danny Leikus singled to left bringing Henschel around to score.Â
Jacksonville then scored six unanswered runs between the bottom of the second and the bottom of the fifth innings to take a 10-2 lead. Thompson broke Rhode Island's cold spell with a solo homer to left center field in the sixth inning cutting the Jacksonville lead to seven runs.Â
