How it Happened
Jonah Hinton tied the program record for 3-pointers in a game as Rhode Island beat No. 18 Saint Louis 81-76 at the Ryan Center on Tuesday night, handing the Billikens just their second loss of the season and first since Nov. 28. The Ram win snapped an 18-game win streak for Saint Louis.
After a pair of
Myles Corey free throws with less than two minutes remaining, Rhode Island (15-11, 6-7 Atlantic 10) took a 77-69 lead over Saint Louis (24-2, 12-1 Atlantic 10). The Billikens responded with a 7-0 run capped off by a Robbie Avila layup to cut the Rhode Island lead to one point with 29 seconds left.Â
Despite not converting on a field goal attempt over the last four minutes, Rhode Island hit four clutch free throws, two more from Corey and two from
Tyler Cochran in the closing seconds ice the Rams' first win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 23, 2017.Â
Saint Louis hung around all game, yet it was Rhode Island who led for 36 minutes of game play. A made layup from Billiken guard Amari Mccottry gave the Saint Louis a 12-11 lead at 14:27 in the first half. That was Saint Louis' last lead of the game.
Hinton helped set the tone for the Rams by opening the game with hitting five of his first six 3-point attempts. That sequence helped Rhode Island to a 19-15 lead over the game's opening seven minutes.Â
Hinton continued to impress in the second half. At 9:06, Hinton drilled a deep three-pointer to give the Rams a 65-58 lead. That was Hinton's ninth and final of the evening. With the make he tied Tyson Wheeler's program-best nine three-point makes in a game from Jan. 6, 1998.Â
