How it Happened
Rhode Island dropped both games in a Saturday doubleheader at Alabama. The Crimson Tide swept the Rams in a three-game series over the last two days.
Game One – Alabama 8, Rhode Island 5
Rhode Island plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to trim Alabama's lead to one, but the rally came up short as the Rams fell, 8-5, in game two of the series against the Crimson Tide.
Jayden Tolentino's three-run home run to left capped the seventh-inning surge and pulled Rhode Island within 6-5. Alabama responded by retiring the next eight Ram batters and adding insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to secure the win.
Alabama struck first in the bottom of the second on a Justin Osterhouse sacrifice fly. The Crimson Tide's 1-0 advantage was erased in the next half inning when Rhode Island answered with two runs; a solo home run from Tolentino and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jack Hopko that brought home Scott Penney.
The Tide seized control in the bottom of the fourth, erupting for four runs, and added another in the fifth to build a 6-2 lead through six innings. Rhode Island's late push in the seventh was not enough as the Alabama bullpen closed the door to take the series.
Game Two – Alabama 11, Rhode Island 1 (8 inn.)
Alabama scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, leading to an 11-1 Crimson Tide win over Rhode Island in game two or Saturday's doubleheader.
The Rams managed to score one run in game three of the series on a Ryan Thompson ground out in the top of the seventh scoring Reece Moroney.
