HUMACAO, Puerto Rico - Rhode Island opens its Spring schedule with a powerhouse field at the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate in Puerto Rico on Sunday. The three-day, three-round tournament features 14 schools, including five that are ranked in the top 100 of the 311 Division I programs that Scoreboard ranks. Â
The field includes Wake Forest (25th) and Texas Christian (42nd), both of which competed in the 2025 NCAA Championship field. Also among the top 100 ranked programs competing at Palmas Del Mar will be Michigan (57th), Rutgers (62nd) and Kennesaw State (91st).
There are three teams from the ACC (Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Boston College); two from the Big 10 (Michigan, Rutgers), one from the Big 12 (Texas Christian) and two from Conference USA (Kennesaw State, Delaware).
"This is an important tournament simply because it ignites the engine to the Atlantic 10 Championship earlier than we're accustomed," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "We left last semester with the thought that we have to do all the little things well before we can do great things. Clearly we are not there yet.Â
"This is a business trip for us. The fact that it is in Puero Rico simply needs it is warmer and we had to fly to get there. Other than that, it is a business trip."
Rhode Island enters the weekend knocking on the door of the top 100, ranked No. 112. URI is the top ranked team in the Atlantic 10 as the Spring season gets underway, thanks to four team titles in six events during the Fall.
The Rams will be represented by
Luke Stennett,
Tony Liu,
Tyler Bruneau,
Aidan O'Donovan and
Josiah Tong.
All three rounds of the tournament will be played on Palmas Del Mar's Flamboyán Course. Located on the Caribbean Sea, the Flamboyán Course has been ranked as the second-best course in Puerto Rico by Golf Digest (November 2003) and the best course on the island by Barron's Magazine (March 1999).
