Day 2 Results | Leaderboard
HUMACAO, Puerto Rico - Rhode Island fired a 9-under par as a team to surge up the leaderboard on the second day of the Palmas Del Mar Collegiate on Tuesday. The Rams moved up to third place in the team standings, trailing only No. 25 Wake Forest and TCU.
All four of Rhode Island's scoring golfers in the round were even par or better.
Josiah Tong continued his strong play, sinking six birdies whiling carding a 4-under 68. He is tied for seventh in the 87-player field, just five strokes behind individual leaders Tom Haberer of Wake Forest and Shaun Cook of Kennesaw State.
The field includes nine players ranked in the top 150 nationally, according to Scoreboard. Tong is trailing just four of the nine heading into the final round.
"Josiah has just matured so much as a player and leader that his performance is not a surprise," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "This is the calmest I have ever seen him on the golf course. He has grown into a very confident player and one who can win tournaments for us."
Luke Stennett rebounded from a tough opening round (plus-6) to match Tong's 68 for the Rams. Stennett had two eagles, two birdies and just one bogey on the day to climb 32 spots on the leaderboard into 36th place.
After being even on Day One,
Tony Liu was 1-under on Monday, thanks to an eagle on the seventh hole. He is in 26th place.
Aidan O'Donovan is 33rd overall after shooting even par with five birdies.
Tyler Bruneau is 3-over par and in 51st overall.
"We had a very nice day today, but it really could have been even better," Burke said. "We are leading the field by a long shot in par-five scoring, which is directly attributable to our work in the performance center. Yesterday we beat a Top 50 program (TCU) and today we beat the 25th ranked program (Wake Forest). All while never having played outside coming into this event.
"As crazy as it sounds, we've played two rounds and made just seven birdies on par fours and only two on par threes. We just have to continue playing Rhody Golf to make a run at the title.
Rhode Island will be in the leaders group for the final round on Tuesday. The Rams will be in foursomes with TCU, Wake Forest and UNC Greensboro.
