Cochran's Career-High Day Leads Rams Over Spiders

How it Happened
Tyler Cochran's career-high 34 points led Rhode Island to an 82-77 win over Richmond on Saturday afternoon at the Ryan Center. Cochran added 10 rebounds and made 15-of-17 free throw attempts helping the Rams to a regular season sweep of the Spiders. 

Rhode Island (14-9, 5-5 Atlantic 10) was efficient from the charity stripe against Richmond (13-11, 3-8 Atlantic 10) while shooting a season best 81 percent from the free throw line on season highs in makes (34) and attempts (42). 

Despite trailing by as many as 10 points late in the first half, Rhode Island closed the deficit to one before halftime, 34-33. The Rams finished the half on a 7-0 run capped off by a second-chance layup from Jahmere Tripp.  

The Rams climbed ahead of the Spiders midway through the second. Cochran completed a three-point play to give Rhode Island its first lead since 15-13 halfway through the first half. The Cochran bucket gave Rhode Island a 55-54 advantage. 

Last in the second half, with the Rams up five, a Mike Walz three-point make brought the Spiders within two with 27 seconds remaining. From there Rhode Island made five of its last six free throw attempts, including four from Cochran, to ice the game late in the half.

  • Jahmere Tripp contributed 17 points, five rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.
  • Tripp set a new career-high in free throw attempts with 11, beating his previous mark of eight which he set against Dayton on Jan. 27.
  • Myles Corey added 12 points, three rebounds, and one assist.
  • Corey was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
  • Keeyan Itejere had 10 points, six rebounds, one assist, and one block.
  • Jalen Harper tacked on six points, two rebounds, one block, and one steal.
  • RJ Johnson led the Rams in assists with seven, and added five rebounds, three points, and two steals.
  • Alex Crawford drove the Rams on the defensive end with three steals and a block. Despite not scoring, he had a plus-12 in 19 minutes.
