Rams Place Seventh at Surf Club Invitational

Final Team Standings | Full Team Results

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Aidan O'Donovan and Josiah Tong both delivered top-10 individual performances to help Rhode Island place seventh out of 18 teams at the Surf Club Invitational.

The Rams improved with each round, shooting plus-4 as a team in the opening round, followed by minus-4 and minus-6 in the final two rounds. It helped Rhody move up two spots on the final day of competition.

O'Donovan finished in a tie for fourth place in the 107-player field. He was 10-under for the tournament, going under par in all three rounds. Tong was tied for 10th after jumping 16 spots up the leaderboard on the final day, thanks to a six-under third round that included six birdies, four of which came in his first five holes.

"There were a lot of positives out there today," Rhode Island Head Coach Gregg Burke said. "Josiah continues to improve and as good as he was coming in this year, no one has improved as much as he has. His stretch of four birdies in five holes matched Aidan's and really have a us a spark. Aidan did not have the round he wanted, but he never got down on himself, never gave up, and fought until the end.  Overall he was terrific down here.

A late surge by Tyler Bruneau helped him move up nine spots into a tie for 33rd place overall. He had five straight birdies from holes 9-13 to get to minus-2 in the final round. Owen Rooney was steady throughout, shooting 3-over par in each of the final two rounds. Benett Masterson also had his best showing of the tournament, shooting 5-over in the final round.

"Tyler had a slow start, but when he shook it off, he got hot, making five straight birdies, Burke said. "Owen was solid for a very long time. In one 31-hole stretch he was just one over. He probably made more pars than anyone on the team. He just has to learn how to finish, but he is beginning to understand he can play at this level. I also thought Bennett flashed some signs of solid golf and look forward to seeing him work hard to get another chance.

"At the end of the day, we came here with our 3-7 players after first semester play. I was very proud of their effort and who they beat."

The Rams are off until the Wildcat Spring Invitational hosted by Villanova from April 6-7. Rhody has two more events before the Atlantic 10 Championship.
