Cochran Named A-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island's Tyler Cochran picked up a slew of postseason honors from the Atlantic 10, including being names as Co-Defensive Player of the Year in voting amongst the league's coaches. Cochran shared the Defensive Player of the Year award with Justice Ajogbor of Saint Joseph's.

That was one of four honors Cochran received from the league, which released its awards Tuesday morning. Cochran also was named Second Team All-Conference as and earned spots on the All-Defensive and Academic All-Conference teams.

Heading into the conference tournament, Cochran has averaged 14.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.9 assists per game. He is third nationally in both total steals (85) and steals per game (2.74). During conference play, he ranked fourth in the league with 16.7 points per game and was tied for fifth with 6.8 rebounds per game. He has eight 20-point performances and was a one-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week.

In addition to his on-court performance, Cochran has a 3.85 grade-point average as a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in Education. He is Rhode Island's first major postseason award winner since Dan Hurley was the league's Coach of the Year in 2017-18. Cochran also joined Hassan Martin as the program's only Defensive Player of the Year winner. Martin won the honor in back-to-back seasons (2015-16 and 2016-17). Cochran is the team's first Academic All-Conference selection since Jeff Dowtin made the team three times from 2017-2020.

Cochran and the Rams play in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday, March 12 at 5 p.m.
