Slow Start Hurts Rams at Sam Ryder

Day One Results

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
 - A rough opening round hurt Rhode Island on the opening day of the Sam Ryder Intercollegiate Monday.

Playing on the Hills Course of the LPGA International, the Rams are in 10th place out of 14 teams after two rounds of competition. Rhode Island was 19 strokes over par after Round One, putting the team 24 strokes behind host Stetson, which was minus-5 in the opening round.

"Today was very little of what we wanted, but sadly some of what has been coming," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "We have not been at our best with doing simple things like being on time, fulfilling responsibilities, or handling distractions. We've lacked leadership but I see that improving as we move forward."

"That all said, I believe in this team as a group. We need to block out noise on the golf course and buckle down off the course. There  has been a certain feeling of entitlement and we've spoiled them a bit. We will look at all of that moving forward.

"But make no mistake. This group has talent. It's up to all of us to decide what to do with that."

In the second round of the day, Rhode Island shaved 12 strokes off the team score, shooting a plus-7 as a team. Rhody, Campbell and James Madison tied for the fifth-lowest score of the second round. Josiah Tong was 5-under par and Tyler Bruneau shot even par in Round Two to stabilize URI's performance.

Aidan O'Donovan and Tong are tied for 26th on the individual leaderboard to lead the Rams heading into Tuesday's final round. Both players are 4-over par, eight strokes behind overall leaders Jackson Hicks and Matthis Lefevre of Stetson.

The host Hatters lead the field by 13 strokes and are the lone team under par heading into Tuesday's final round.

Rhode Island is grouped with Georgia State and North Dakota State for the final day of competition.
