How it Happened
Using a seven-run fifth inning, Rhode Island pulled away from George Mason to take game one of the weekend series Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. Ryan Henschel's three-run home run capped the Rams' offensive surge in the fifth inning.

George Mason took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs, but Rhode Island responded immediately. The Rams reached base with each of the first six batters in the bottom half of the inning. Their first out came on a Brian Connolly sacrifice fly that scored Jack Hopko, and Henschel followed later in the inning with a three-run home run to extend the lead to 9-4.

Rhode Island was efficient on the mound as well. Joe Sabbath started and went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. Sam Houchens relieved him and pitched the final four innings to earn the save.

The Rams added their final run in the seventh when Scott Penney grounded out to score Ryan King. George Mason pushed across a run in the ninth, but it was not enough as Rhode Island secured the series-opening victory.
