How it Happened
Rhode Island could not solve the George Mason pitching as it fell 3-1 to the Patriots Saturday afternoon.
The Rams managed just five hits off the trio of Diego Cardenas (3-2), Carter Kelsey and
Brandon Hsu. Cardenas hurled five shutout innings for the victory. Kelsey came on for three innings of work, allowing the lone URI run. Former Ram Hsu closed things out to earn his first save.
George Mason scored twice in the top of the first inning. With one out, Jake Butler and Owen Clyne hit back-to-back doubles to bring Butler in with the first run. Luciano Terilli later dove Clyne in with a single through the left side, giving the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
The Patriots added to the lead in the top of the third. Lucas Alberti singled through the left side to drive in Butler, who had walked earlier in the frame.
Rhody got one run in the eighth inning.
Aidan Botti tripled down the right field line and came in on a balk. That was all the offense Rhody was able to muster.
