Round 1 Results
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A dominant performance has Rhode Island senior captain
Aidan O'Donovan atop the leaderboard through Day One of the Surf Club Invitational.
Play was suspended due to darkness with teams needing to finish up to eight holes in the second round. As a team, Rhode Island will begin Day Two in a tie for eighth out of 18 teams.
Much of URI's success came from O'Donovan, who was nearly flawless through 34 holes of play. He is tied for the lead at 8-under par, sinking 10 birdies with just two bogeys.
Josiah Tong also played strong, sitting at 1-under par with three holes remaining in his second round. He has an eagle and for birdies thus far in his second round.
"Today was the Aidan Show," Rhode Island Head Coach
Gregg Burke said. "We fielded a very different team than we have all year because
Luke Stennett and
Tony Liu played their way out of the lineup. But Aidan truly stepped up and played magnificent golf. Josiah played very well, especially in the afternoon round."
Tyler Bruneau,
Owen Rooney and
Bennett Masterson completed the URI contingent. Bruneau is even par and tied for 36th. Rooney is playing his first tournament of the year, and Masterson his second. Rooney is plus-nine, but he hit a strong groove in the second round, carding 12 consecutive pars from holes three through 14. Masterson is three stroke behind Rooney.

"This is one of the easiest courses we play so we expected good scores," Burke said. "Certainly Aidan playing almost perfect golf was very impressive and he has very much earned the lead overall. But we need stronger scoring after him and Josiah. Tyler made a lot of birdies and really hit it well both rounds but lost a lot of strokes with his putter. I think he'll really make a move tomorrow.
Â
"We gave Owen and Bennett a chance and they both showed solid golf at times. I was especially proud of Owen playing so steady. He lost a bunch of strokes to par with his putter, but he stayed in it all day long. Tomorrow will show how tough we are."
Teams will be on the course Tuesday at 9 a.m. Players will complete their second rounds and then move right into the final.
