STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Sophomore
Tyler Bruneau played his way into contention at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. He shot a 3-under par in the second round to get within three strokes of the leaders heading into Sunday's final round.
Bruneau was in 34th place in the 75-player field after the opening round. He shot 24 spots up the leaderboard by sinking four birdies and carding just one bogey Saturday evening.
Owen Rexing of St. Thomas-Minnesota leads the field at four-under par. His teammate Mason Rolof, Delaware's Arsit Areephunn and Penn State's Nick Werner are all tied for second at three-under par.
"I am incredibly proud of Tyler, who played a nearly perfect 36 holes of golf," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "He was two swings from leading this golf tournament. He had only three holes all day that were not pars or birdie - no one in the field could match that. He moved up 24 spots in the second round, which is significant."
Rhode Island is in seventh place in the 13-team field. The Rams are nine-over par. Host Penn State is five strokes ahead of the field at eight-under par, followed by George Mason (-3) and St. Thomas-Minnesota (+1).
Sophomore
Luke Stennett was even par in the second round to move into a tie for 33rd place, finishing the day three-over par. Also at three-over is
Aidan O'Donovan, who was strong in the opening round.
Josiah Tong was one stroke behind Stennett and O'Donovan.
"We got a good first round from Aidan and Josiah and a solid second round from Luke, but teams ahead of us showed that the golf course was there to be taken today," Burke said. "Tomorrow is a day to show how much we want the A10 Championship. It is that simple."
In the opening round,O'Donovan had the Rams off to a fast start. He was three-under through the first 11 holes. O'Donovan carded three straight birdies from holes nine through 11, helping Rhody move to the top of the team standings. However, URI shot 8-over as a team over the final five holes, causing Rhody to slip to four-over for the round. The late struggles dropped the Rams to a tie for sixth in the standings.
Rhode Island will be in the first groups to go out on Sunday. The Rams will play with Bucknell and Towson in the final.
