Rams Finish Strong, Take Third at Rutherford

Team Standings | Individual Leaderboard

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.
- Rhode Island had the lowest team score of the day to shoot its way to a third-place finish at the Rutherford Intercollegiate Sunday.

The Rams were at least five strokes better than every other team in the field in the final round, scoring six-under for the day. Despite being in the first groups to tee off - when temperatures were still in the low 30s - Rhody jumped four spots in the standings for its best finish ever at the event.

"I am not a big fan of dramatic comebacks because they are necessarily preceded by bad play, but to shoot six-under and beat Penn State by five and UConn by 15, especially since we had to tee off when the temperature was in the thirties, was impressive," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said.

Sophomore Tyler Bruneau was under par for the second straight round. He carded five birdies and was three-under over the final eight holes to finish the tournament tied for third place.

Junior Josiah Tong was three-under par on the final, jumping 28 spots into 10th place on the individual leaderboard. Aidan O'Donovan (T-28th) and Tony Liu (T-34th) provided the other scoring rounds for the Rams. Liu was three-under on Sunday.

"Tyler continued to show he is our best golfer right now," Burke said. "And once again, we used Josiah's and Aidan's score all three rounds, with a special nod to JT's three-red final round.

"I am cautiously optimistic that the talks and time with Tony hit home. His three-under final round with Coach Brandon Gillis walking every hole with him really set a tone."

Rhode Island heads to the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Grand Cypress Links Course in Orlando. The three-day tournament begins Monday, April 27.

"We'll bring the same five to A-10s this week with the hope that today's showing and a solid A-10 gets us in the National Golf Invitational of we don't win the conference championship," Burke said.
