GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -
Luke Stennett fired an even-par 71 in the second round of the Wildcat Spring Invitational to help Rhode Island move up to fourth place in the team standings Monday.
Rhody was plus-18 after the opening round as each member of the team's lineup was over par. The Rams found themselves in seventh place in the 12-team tournament.
Stennett and the Rams settled down in the second round. With four birdies, Stennett moved up 25 on the individual leaderboard. Heading into the final round he is in eighth place overall.
Josiah Tong,
Aidan O'Donovan and
Tyler Bruneau all shaved strokes off their opening rounds as well. After a plus-7 opening round, Tong was one over par in the second round, jumping 19 spots on the leaderboard in the process.
O'Donovan lowered his score by two strokes and Bruneau by one.
"The golf course is not as difficult as we made it," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "But make no mistake, this is a championship level 18 holes of golf. As always look at guys who play their best late in the round, late in the tournament, and late in the season. Tomorrow is all of that.
"We were really happy to see Luke get back to form, but we need better golf from all four guys tomorrow."
Villanova leads the team standings with a team scored of plus-16 (584). Georgetown (587) is three strokes behind the host Wildcats, while Navy (593) is one stroke ahead of Rhode Island and Seton Hall (594).
