How it Happened
Aidan Botti's home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Rhode Island over Fordham, 6-5, at Bill Beck Field on Saturday afternoon. It was Botti's first homer of the season and evened the weekend series at one game apiece.
With Rhode Island struggling to throw strikes, Fordham added two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 5. The score remained tied until Botti's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth.Â
Fordham had the lead through five innings after scoring runs in three consecutive frames. The visitors plated runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Rhode Island used a three-run sixth inning to open up a 5-3 lead on Fordham. Rhody's first run of the sixth inning came off a sacrifice fly RBI from
Brian Connolly that scored
Reece Moroney. Later in sixth,
Danny Leikus doubled to left center field and brought both
Jack Hopko and
Ryan King in to score.Â
While Rhode Island took the lead in the middle innings, its middle relief effort was strong.
Parker Aikens pitched a scoreless sixth inning allowing one hit and facing the minimum three batters.
Connor Johnston then pitched the seventh and walked one batter but escaped the inning without allowing a hit and striking out one.Â
