How it Happened
Rhode Island posted eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to cap off a 17-16 comeback victory at Davidson on Friday afternoon.
Reece Moroney's two-out, two-RBI double gave Rhode Island its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth and helped the Rams to the series opening win.
Â
The Rams entered the ninth inning trailing 14-9 but the first five Rhode Island batters reached base safely to start the dramatic final inning.
Ryan Thompson led off the inning with a single through the right side, following by another single to right field from
Reece Moroney.
Jack Hopko then homered to cut the Davidson lead to two runs. The next two Rams,
Ryan King and
Brian Connolly, each reached base; King on a Davidson error and Connolly via walk.Â
After King and Connolly each advanced a base on a wild pitch, the Wildcats responded by retiring the next two Rams. Rhode Island had the tying run on second with two outs and
Scott Penney at the plate. Penney rolled a ball over to short, but another Davidson error allowed both King and Connolly to score and tied the game at 14. With Penney on first,
Ryan Thompson reached on another Wildcat error and set up Moroney's game winning double.Â
Davidson managed to push across two runs in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, the Wildcats had the tying run 90 feet away.
Manny Santos then struck out the final batter to push the Rams to the win.Â
Rhode Island erased a 9-0 first inning by consistently chipping away at the Davidson lead. The Rams scored multiple runs in the second, fourth, fifth, eighth, and ninth innings to stay within striking distance of the Wildcats.Â
