Offense Erupts Late to Beat Davidson, 17-7

How it Happened 
Rhode Island's offense erupted for 12 runs in the top of the eighth to beat Davidson 17-7 in game two of the weekend series in North Carolina. 

Entering the eighth, Rhode Island had trailed 6-5. The Rams then scored their next 12 runs in the frame on 12 hits and no Davidson errors.

The first run of the inning tied the game at 6-6. With the bases loaded, Ryan King drew a five-pitch walk that pushed Scott Penney to the plate. In the Rams next at-bat, Brain Connolly hit a sacrifice fly RBI to center field that brought Ryan Thompson in to score the give Rhode Island a 7-6 lead. 

The eventual winning run came during the at-bat following Connolly's sac fly. With Danny Leikus up to bat, a Davidson wild pitch allowed Reece Moroney to score from third base and lifted the Rhode Island lead to 8-6. Leikus finished his at-bat with a walk and Nicholas Toro followed up with a single that scored King to further the Rhode Island lead. 

Later in the inning, the Rams 12-run inning was capped of with back-to-back home runs from Jack Hopko and King to give Rhode Island a 17-6 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. 

Sam Houchens then retired six of the eight batters his faced across the next two innings to clinch the series win for Rhode Island. 

Inside the Box Score
  • Danny Leikus had four hits in five at-bats. He had a double, two RBI, and a run scored.
  • Reece Moroney four base hits, three runs scored, and two RBI.
  • Ryan Thompson had three hits, stole a base, an RBI, and three runs scored.
  • Scott Penney, Jack Hopko, and Ryan Henschel each had two hits. 
  • Both of Hopko's hits were home runs. 
  • Ryan King had a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored. 
  • Nicholas Toro also had a hit. He added an RBI and run scored. 
  • Sam Houchens relieved Joe Sabbath. Sabbath went the first four innings with Houchens going the next five and recording his second win of the season. 
  • Houchens gave up one run on three hits and struck out seven batters.
