Inside the Position Room: Returning Running Backs Lead Loaded Group

KINGSTON, R.I. - Who will take over the the top back for Rhode Island in 2026 after the departure of Antwain Littleton, Jr. is yet to be seen.

With returning running backs BJ Barrow (Etobicoke, Ontario), Gabe Winowich (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), and Terrence Campbell (Providence, R.I.) all competing through training camp, Rhode Island Football's running backs room is deep heading into the new season.

Littleton, Jr. accounted for over 50 percent of Rhode Island rushing attempts in 2025. His 1,243 yards last year is fourth most in a single season in program history. With 14 rushing touchdowns, too, Littleton, Jr. solidified himself as the top running back a season ago.

Barrow is Rhode Island's most seasoned back. After a four year career at Stanford, he was the number two running back last year with 423 rushing yards, five touchdowns, and led the Rams with 11 kick returns a season ago. Barrow exploded for a career day against New Hampshire on Oct. 11. He rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns. That was one of two, two touchdown days for Barrow. He also did so at Maine on Nov. 15.

After appearing in 12 games for the Rams in 2025 after transferring from Rutgers, Winowich has competed for the top spot on the depth chart through training camp. He rushed for 169 yards last season and added a pair of touchdowns in 2025. Both of his TDs came against Bryant on Oct. 25. He had career highs in rushing attempts (13) and rushing yards (90) against the Bulldogs.

A true freshman in 2025, Campbell enters his second season with Rhode Island in 2026. He appeared in five games with 11 rushing attempts and 40 yards. Through his usage was minimal in 2025, Campbell impressed during Oct. 18's win at UAlbany. The Rhode Island native rushed for 39 yards and a touchdown.

True freshman Brayden Richardson (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) joined the Rams this summer as the fourth running back in the mix for snaps this season. Richardson's 6-foot, 210-pound frame adds depth on both offense and potentially in special teams. His high school career was littered with accolades including  All-League, All-County, All-Conference, All-Section, and First Team All-State honors his senior season at Sleepy Hollow. His senior campaign also included over 3,000 all purpose yards and 41 total touchdowns.

Carson Harwood (West Roxbury, Mass.) joins Barrow, Winowich, and Campbell as another returning back this fall. The third year Ram has appeared in three games over the last two seasons for Rhode Island.
