Men's Basketball Suffers Loss To Xavier, 78-75

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Maurice McAfee scored 23 points and David West added 20 points and 14 rebounds as Xavier beat Rhode Island 78-75 Sunday.

Rhode Island (3-11, 0-2 Atlantic-10) dropped its ninth straight game, despite a career-high 23 points from Tip Vinson and 21 by Tavorris Bell.

Xavier (11-3, 2-0) shot 61 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes, and 57 percent for the game. It also hit 15-of-19 free throws, including 7-of-9 in the final two minutes of the game.

After the teams entered halftime tied at 30, Xavier outscored the Rams 11-2 in the first three minutes of the second half to take a 49-39 lead with 14:13 remaining. But Rhode Island, behind three 3-pointers by Vinson, rallied to take the lead 63-62 with 7:00 to go.

The lead changed hands seven times before a layup by West with 3:13 left put Xavier ahead for good, 70-69.
