Men's Basketball Falls To Florida State, 86-71

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Nigel Dixon muscled his way to 23 points as Florida State beat Rhode Island 86-71 Saturday to take seventh place in the Great Alaska Shootout.

The Seminoles won their first game of the season by consistently finding the 6-10, 350-pound Dixon for lean-in baskets.

Florida State dominated underneath the basket, outrebounding the Rams 49-27. Dixon and Michael Joiner each had 10 rebounds.

The Rams closed to 52-48 on a free throw by Tavorris Bell with 14:37 left in the second half. But three Dixon free throws and two baskets off putbacks boosted the lead to 69-56.

The Rams managed just two free throws in the first five minutes as the Seminoles ran up a 16-2 lead.

Rhode Island (1-4) closed to 30-26 on a 12-4 run with about five minutes left in the half with Dinno Daniels scoring nine, but Ryan Lowery and Adrian Crawford hit 3-pointers to blunt the comeback.

Bell led Rhode Island scoring with 29.
