Box Score

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Wayne Smith scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half as Duquesne broke a three-game losing streak and beat Rhode Island 83-69 Wednesday night.

The Dukes (7-9 and 1-2 Atlantic 10) ran up a 12-0 lead and never trailed in the game.

Rhode Island (4-11, 0-2) was without leading scorer and rebounder Tavorris Bell for a second consecutive game. The junior forward, whose 20.8 points per game are second in the conference, was declared academically ineligible last week, a decision that is under appeal.

Charles Stanfield paced Duquesne in the first half, shooting 5-of-7 from the field, and ended up with 12 points.

Duquesne led 41-30 at the half. Rhode Island trimmed the lead to four early in the second half before Aaron Lovelace scored six consecutive points for Duquesne.

Courtney Wallace scored 13 points for the Dukes and matched his season high with seven assists.

Rhode Island was also without Brian Woodward, who has a knee injury. Woodward has averaged 12.4 points in only five games this season.
