Football Stunned by Richmond 28-0, Dumped from Unbeaten Ranks

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Cordell Roane ran for 111 yards and threw two touchdown passes Saturday to lead the Spiders over the Rams 28-0.

It was Richmond's (2-5, 2-3 Atlantic 10) first shutout in 52 games. The Spiders' first TD pass of the season was for 42 yards from Roane to Mike Millard late in the second quarter. His second TD pass was for five yards to Boyd Ouden with 2:14 left in the third.

No. 4 Rhode Island (7-1, 5-1 Atlantic 10) entered the game leading the Atlantic 10 conference with average rushing of 281 yards a game. The Rams were held to 92 yards total offense, compared to Richmond's 365 yards.

Rhode Island lost its chance to tie the school's record for consecutive wins.

Richmond's first TD was set up following a Vince Nedimyer fumble at the Spiders' 16 yard line, recovered by Jonathan Wilfong. Kenny Dantzler ran it in for four yards, giving Richmond a 7-0 lead in the first.

The final score of the game was a 2-yard run by J.R. Purnell with 10:54 left.

Richmond's defense held the Rams to 92 yards on offense, five first downs and had four sacks.
