Men's Basketball Falls To Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Carlos Dixon scored 17 points and had five rebounds as Virginia Tech defeated Rhode Island 86-63 Tuesday night.

Junior center Terry Taylor added 16 points and seven rebounds in his second game for Tech (2-0).

Rhode Island (0-1) was led by Jamaal Wise with 13 points and five rebounds. Guard Howard Steel added a dozen points and had three steals.

Virginia Tech outrebounded Rhode Island 45-19, and Tech scored 23 second-chance points to Rhode Island's six.

Rhode Island shot 60 percent in the first half and trailed by 10 points at intermission, but sank only 25 percent of its shots in the second half.

It was the 500th basketball game played at Virginia Tech's Cassell Coliseum, which opened in 1961 and where the Hokies are now 394-106.
