Men's Basketball Drops Iona, 66-61

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - Brian Woodward scored 18 points, including a key three-point play during a game-ending 11-0 run, to lead Rhode Island to a 66-61 win over Iona on Saturday.

Rhode Island (1-1) trailed 61-55 with 3:41 to play but held Iona scoreless the rest of the way. Lazare Adingono's basket with 1:28 to play tied the game at 61-61. Rhode Island took a 64-61 lead when Woodward hit a foul shot after a successful drive to the basket and bank shot with 50.3 seconds remaining.

Iona (0-3) had taken a 61-55 lead after a fast break basket by Leland Norris and two foul shots by Greg Jenkins.

Adingono scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Iona had a chance trailing 64-61, but Woodward dove to the floor for a loose ball after a Dyree Wilson miss with 15.3 seconds to play.

Jenkins led Iona with 13 points and Charles Henson had 11.

Rhode Island shot just 37 percent from the floor, but had a big advantage from the foul line, hitting on 22-of-28 free throws. Iona was 5-of-9 from the line.
