Men's Basketball Falls To George Washington

PROVIDENCE R.I. (AP) - Mike King scored 23 points to lead George Washington to a 77-47 win Wednesday night over Rhode Island.

George Washington (11-13, 5-6 Atlantic 10) opened the game with a 12-2 run in the first 4:15 of play. Attila Cosby and Mike King both scored six points during that stretch.

Rhode Island (5-20, 1-11) turned the ball over six times in the first four minutes of the game as they dug themselves an early hole. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Greg Collucci started a 10-0 George Washington run that upped its lead to 29-11 with 8:40 to play in the first half.

Bernard Barrow capped the run with a baseline drive. Mike King's 3-pointer with 2:45 left in the half gave George Washington its biggest lead in the first half at 36-18.

George Washington led 38-22 by the half. King scored 14 points in the first half on 5-of-5 shooting.

George Washington opened the second half with a 6-2 run to go ahead 44-24 with 17:53 to play. The closest Rhode Island would get after that point was 47-30 on a 3-pointer by Steve Mello with 13:58 to play.

Rhode Island was without head coach Jerry DeGregorio who was admitted to a hospital Tuesday night for exhaustion - one day after announcing his resignation, effective at the end of the season. Assistant coach George Blaney coached the team in DeGregorio's absence.
