NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Vince Nedimyer's 1-yard touchdown run with 3:19 remaining in the second quarter lifted Rhode Island to a 10-7 Atlantic 10 victory over Delaware in the season opener for both teams.

The Rams defense limited Delaware's offense to just 166 total yards, the lowest total by the Blue Hens since 1990.

Fullback David Jamison gained 99 yards on 33 carries for the Rams.

Delaware quarterback Sam Postlethwait, a fifth-year senior, struggled in his first start, completing just 6 of 14 passes for 31 yards.

Delaware, coming off a 12-2 season and a trip to the Division I-AA semifinals, lost their season opener for the first time since 1994 and fell to Rams for the first time since 1988.

Rhode Island took a 3-0 lead on Shane Laisle's 43-yard field goal with 1:24 left in the first quarter, capping a 10-play, 43-yard drive.

Delaware's only score came two possessions later when Butch Patrick scored on a 2-yard run. The score was set up by a 62-yard run by Butter Pressey, the longest of the senior's career.

The game was delayed for 44 minutes in the third quarter due to heavy rains and lightning in the area.
