Rams Hold Off Late Hofstra Rally, Win 35-26

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) - Luther Green scored four touchdowns and Rhode Island held off a second-half rally Saturday to beat Hofstra 35-26.

Green scored on an 8-yard run and caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Vince Nedimyer in the first quarter, and Sam Wellington scored on a 21-yard run in the second quarter to give Rhode Island (2-0, 2-0 Atlantic 10) a 21-0 halftime lead.

Hofstra (1-1, 1-1) pulled within 21-20 on touchdown passes of 27, 43 and 17 yards from Rocky Butler to Kahmal Roy. Butler finished 27-of-45 for 351 yards and Roy caught 10 passes for 172 yards.

But Green, who rushed for 83 yards on five carries and caught three passes for 68 yards, scored on fourth quarter runs of 14 and 44 yards to put the game away.

The 44-yard run came just seconds after Butler threw his fourth touchdown pass of the day, a 12-yarder to Charlie Adams, with 1:55 to play to pull Hofstra within 28-26.

Rhode Island had 284 yards rushing, led by Green and David Jamison, with 83 yards on 16 carries. Nedimyer was 11-of-15 for 181 yards.
